Preserving the essence of taste while honoring tradition since 1978
Pioneers in the Science of Palatability Since 1978
In the mid-1950s, the commercial flavor industry for animal feed began to take shape. A few innovators in the feed industry recognized that while additives like antibiotics were beneficial to livestock, they often lacked palatability. As more additives were incorporated into feed, the issue of diminishing palatability became clear. With varying feed ingredients and additives, the need for agricultural flavoring presented a major opportunity both in the United States and globally. Since the amount of molasses used to mask the unpleasant taste of these additives was limited by volume, an alternative approach to improving feed palatability became necessary.
Between the mid-1950s and 1970s, the flavor industry for animal agriculture saw modest growth, with three, and later four, companies producing flavors. However, this expansion faced some resistance from nutrition departments at feed manufacturers, as the flavor compounds did not contribute to the nutritional value of the feed. Some nutritionists even felt that adding flavors might imply their feed was inferior, requiring flavoring for animals to consume it. Today, the landscape has significantly evolved, with over twenty companies now producing flavors for the agricultural sector.
Agri-Flavors, Inc., based in Guntersville, Alabama, was established in the fall of 1978 by Bryce Strachan, who brought over a decade of experience in the flavor industry. In the spring of 1979, Bill Kendrick joined the company, contributing his extensive knowledge from over ten years in the feed industry and more than five years in the flavor industry. By 1996, Bill Kendrick became president and owner of Agri-Flavors, Inc., bringing with him over 23 years of expertise in the flavor industry.
Agri-Flavors, Inc. recently experienced a significant transition with the passing of Bill Kendrick, who played a pivotal role in the company’s success and growth. Under the leadership of the new owner, Donnie Nailor, the company is embarking on a new chapter while continuing to uphold its strong traditions. Despite this change, Agri-Flavors remains deeply committed to its core mission of delivering the highest quality flavors to the feed industry. The company continues to prioritize innovation and excellence, ensuring the “Preservation of Good Taste” that has defined its reputation for decades. With a renewed focus on the future, Agri-Flavors is poised to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
